About - Living Off The Grid

Living Off The Grid- Off Grid Living - Les and Jane Oke picture off grid homeBack in 1985 when Jane and I started looking for a place of our own we did not even know about living off the grid. We knew we wanted a piece of land to call our own, but we had some trouble figuring out exactly where and how big we wanted.

During the early years of our marriage we were content to save a little money and dream about what we wanted. Then with the age of 30 fast approaching bells seemed to go off in our head and a sense of urgency surrounded us, we had to act fast, act now, or our kids would grow up in town.

We searched diligently for farm land, fixer uppers and any large lot we could find. None seemed to fit what we wanted. Finally we knew... it was a piece of wilderness that we really wanted, we were homesteaders, adventurers if you will, and that is how off grid living started. We used to take the kids camping all the time and everyone seemed so happy, it finally occurred to us to find a great 'campsite' if you will. A place where we could cut wood, build our own home, grow a huge garden and live life to the fullest.

In a long and arduous search we finally found what we wanted in Eastern Ontario, some 5 hours away from where we grew up.

What are Jane and I all about? It all boils down to off grid living, we love being outdoors, providing for ourselves, growing our own food, and the simple interaction with the wilderness that is all around us.

Off Grid Living - Les with ChickadeeWilderness? the main highway is less than a mile away, but turning down that gravel road transports us to another world, not many people venture down the road, and we kind of like it that way... privacy, peace and quiet are all part of our life.

Bird watching is one of our favorite things. The particularly friendly  chickadees, as shown in this picture are the most fun to feed. They will soon accept a friendly face that is standing by the bird feeder. Place a few sunflower seeds on your shoulder and they will soon pick them up. Then we take it a step further, and with great stealth hold our hand completely still until the sharp eyed chickadee spots the seed and plucks it from our fingers.

It is hard to really explain how our life has evolved, and grown since we moved. It would be very doubtful we would even recognize the family that moved to this wonderful spot in 1993. A little older, a little wiser (we hope), but grown in the ways of our soul, the real understanding of who we are and what we were meant to do with our lives.

Digging deep down is possible here, in fact we feel anything is possible, living off the grid.
